Ha Istent akarod, egyszerű életet kell élned. Egy nap csak huszonnyégy órából áll, és ha egyszer elmúlik, nem tér vissza többé. Ha egy órát elvesztegetsz, az örökre elveszett. Nem tudod visszszerezni. El kell határoznod, mire használsz minden egyes röpke pillanatot: földi élvezetekre vagy Istenre. Ha úgy érzed, elsődleges és legfőbb szükségletetd Isten, akkor, ha leegyszerűsíted az életed, nem lesz zavaró vagy kísértő tényező.
Sok olyan dolgot teszünk itt a Földön, ami szükségtelen. Sok minden van a tulajdonunkban, ami felesleges. Ha van egy autónk, két autót akarunk. Ha van egy házunk, két házat akarunk. Állandóan szaporítani próbáljuk anyagi tulajdonainkat, ahelyett, hogy megpróbálnánk olyan kevéssel létezni, ami földi életünkhöz leginkább szükséges. De tudnunk kell, valójában mit akarunk. Ha spirituálisak akarunk lenni, akkor természetesen időnk legnagyobb részét spirituális tevékenységekkel kell töltenünk.
Talán úgy érzed, hogy amikor anyagi életed teljes biztonságban van, és elértél már némi anyagi sikert, amikor eljutottál egyfajta külső öröm-és tökéletességérzéshez, akkor könnyebben tudsz majd spirituális életbe kezdeni. Nos ebben nincs semmi rossz, de a legtöbb kereső úgy találja, hogy amit a fizikai síkon, a külső világban elért, az nem számít előnynek vagy külön segítségnek a spirituális életében. Ha jól megtaláltad a helyed a külső életben, ha biztonságban vagy és elértél bizonyos szintű sikert, az nagyszerű. De ha úgy érzed, hogy ezek a külső eredmények meggyorsítják majd spirituális fejlődésedet, az legtöbb esetben nem igaz. Épp ellenkezőleg, általában pont fordítva lesz. Sok ember ért el világi sikert, de ezzel spiriruális életük gyakran nehezebb lesz, mert az egó, a büszkeség és az önelégültség érzése az anyagilag sikeres ember útjába állhat.
A valódi spirituális siker akaratunk tudatos átadása a Mindenható Akaratának. Nincs abban semmi rossz, ha az anyagi siker és a spirituális siker együtt járnak, feltéve, hogy készek vagyunk mindent feláldozni a spirituális sikerért. De ennek általában az ellenkezője történik. Mikor anyagi sikerünk mind többet követel tőlünk, spirituális életünket feláldozzuk az anyagi élet követeléseiért.

If you want God, you have to lead a simple life. There are only twenty-four hours in the day, and when they are gone, they do not come back again. If you waste an hour, then it is lost to you forever. You will not be able to retrieve it. You have to decide what you will use each fleeting moment for: for worldly pleasure, or for God. If you feel that your first and foremost necessity is God, then if you simplify your life, you will not be distracted or tempted if you keep all the objects of temptation around you, then you are consciously and deliberately delaying your spiritual progress.
There are many things we do here on earth that are unnecessary. There are many things we own that are superfluous. You live in a house, and you have a room. In your room, if you want to, you can have a radio, a stereo, a television and many other things which you don’t really need. I am speaking from the spiritual point of view. If you want to lead a spiritual life, if you want to live the life of aspiration, if you want to realise God, then to make the fastest progress, it will be better for you to think more of God than of music and television, and all kinds of other things. You have to know what you want. If you want to be a spiritual person, then naturally you have to spend most of your time in spiritual pursuits.
You feel that when your material life is fully secure and you have achieved some material success, when you have attained some sense of outer joy or perfection, then it becomes easier for you to enter into the spiritual life. Now, there is nothing wrong in this. But most seekers have found that what they have achieved on the physical, outer plane, is not an asset or additional help to their spiritual life. If you are well established in the outer life, if you are secure and have achieved some standard of success, that is wonderful. But if you feel that these outer achievements will expedite your spiritual progress, that is not true in most cases. On the contrary, usually it will be the other way around. Many people have achieved earthly success: But often their spiritual life will be more difficulte, because ego, pride and a sense of self-sufficiency may stand in the way of materially succesful people.
Real spiritual success is the conscious surrender of our will to the Will of the Almighty. There is nothing wrong if material success and spiritual success go together, provided you are ready to sacrifice everything for spiritual success. But usually what happens is just the opposite. When material success begins to make demands on us, we sacrifice our spiritual life to the demands of the material life.
